Programs for Seniors
SPOT Rehabilitation provides speech, physical, and occupational therapy service in the out-patient clinic in St. Cloud or sometimes within nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home care agencies, or in the individual's home. Therapy usually follows an incident such as a stroke, a flare up of arthritis, a fracture or joint replacement or some other event that contributes to a decline in function. Medicare and supplemental insurance or Medical Assistance reimburse most of the therapy for people over the age of 65.
Seniors may benefit from therapy for ordinary "wear and tear" problems that come with aging. A tightened leg muscle that causes heel pain may be eliminated with physical therapy. Exercise and stretching may prevent reoccurrence of the condition. Neck, arm, shoulder, back pain or lack of mobility may be treated with therapy. SPOT Rehabilitation occupational therapists provide home safety assessment and can make recommendations for adaptation and equipment in the home. Physical therapists provide intervention for fall prevention and functional mobility. The Driver Review Program is another resource available to Seniors.
In addition to physical rehabilitation, Seniors may experience problems with memory on the onset of dementia. A Cognitive Performance Test developed by Claudia Allen can identify the level of cognitive ability for an individual. This information suggests strategies and recommendation for modifying expectations and approaches, adapting the environment and providing guidelines for independent function.
If you think you might benefit from physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy, let your doctor know the reasons and request a referral. Rehabilitation might be right for you and is another way of restoring and protecting your health. Take care of yourself as you age.
