Parkinson’s Disease

PARKINSON’S SUPPORT GROUP:

SPOT Rehabilitation and Home Care is proud to facilitate a monthly Parkinson’s Support Group for those with Parkinson’s Disease as well as their carepartner. SPOT Rehabilitation is a proud sponsor with the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA) in providing an 8 week series of topics for those with PArkinson’s diagnosis in the past 5 years and their Carepartners.  Topics include: What’s Next After Diagnosis, Medication Management of Parkinson’s Disease, Importance of Exercise in PD, Dealing with Physical Symptoms of PD, Tips for Daily Living Relationships, Impact of Parkinson’s on Daily Coping and Relationships, Caring for Others, Caring for Yourself, Building Your Health Care Team.

SERVICES SPOT PROVIDES TO ASSIST WITH PARKINSON’S:

Physical Therapy:

  1. Improve quality of gait, including stride length, posture, speed and freezing episodes
  2.  Fall prevention with dynamic gait
  3.  Caregiver training to assist with bed/wheelchair/car/floor transfers

Occupational Therapy:

  1. Increase and/or prevent upper body range of motion and strength declines.
  2.  Myofascial Release to increase pain free range of motion, posture, and breath volume.
  3. Cognitive assessment—remediation/compensatory techniques with caregiver training.
  4.  Improve ease and independence with self-cares/homemaking tasks with adaptive equipment as needed (compensating for tremors)
  5. In-home assessment for promoting safety and independence, including recommendations for home modifications.

Speech Therapy:

  1.  Provide strategies to improve speech intelligibility, breath support and voice quality when speaking.
  2. Provide strategies to maintain safety swallowing during mealtimes.
  3. Provide communication device fitting when verbal communication is not possible.
